Obama’s school of hard knocks

I’ll try to keep my schadenfreude in check. College students are finally getting the Econ 101 lesson they deserve, but it’s coming from outside the university system. If you’ve been following the drama in California and elsewhere in the recent “day of action” protests, you’ve seen blissful ignorance at its best. Students took to the streets not to protest war in a far-off land or social injustice, rather tuition hikes in a number of state universities. They’re upset that strapped budgets means they might have to pay subsidy-free market value for the education they receive. They can’t seem to understand why evil politicians (politicians who generally subscribe to their view of taxes and spending) could be so heartless.  Simple answer – there ain’t enough to go around. In that most progressive of progressive states, where stratospheric tax rates have forced business elsewhere, California is grappling (yet again) with budget deficits the likes of which have never been seen.

Quick anecdote. I had a conversation with a retired sheriff from a small California town (he was 53 at the time we spoke). He had just retired with 90 percent of his annual pay from the year in which he earned the most. Also, he and his wife have full medical coverage for the rest of their lives. This, unfortunately, is not the exception, but the rule. Any wonder Cali’s in a crunch?

This philosophy, this world view and accompanying public policy, is now being transferred nationwide. We saw what happened with costs in Massachusetts’ universal health care coverage. We’re seeing what happens with generous government redistributive giveaways in California. And even Paul Krugman admits longer unemployment benefits are a work disincentive, which has greatly contributed to stagnation in Europe. Yet it’s these ideas now being advanced for the rest of us by Washington.

Simple statement worth repeating. We can’t tax ourselves rich. It’s been tried, and failed (time and time and time again).

    • Wealth Gap Is Increasing, Study Shows The rich really are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer, a new University of Michigan study shows. Rising inequality isn't new. The gap between rich and poor started growing before Ronald Reagan took office. But what happened under Bush is something entirely unprecedented: For the first time in our history, so much growth is being siphoned off to a small, wealthy minority that most Americans are failing to gain ground even during a time of economic growth -- and they know it. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/08/070807171936.htm

    • Taxes vs Tax Cuts
    • But the it's o.k. to cut taxes for the rich because, as the myth goes, they invest back in their country. Admit it, neither tax cuts or tax increases solve problems. The only benefactors in our economy are the healthcare , insurance, pharmceutical, arms mfrs industry and, of course, the ever populay LOBYY industry. A pox on all of them! lo

    • You know I relly can't understand why people are afraid to call a duck a duck! This conservative crap is no stranger to anyone. We all know that the rich look out for the rich. No, the conservative agendas are not about the betterment of American society as a whole. No, they are not conserned about college tuition, healtcare reform,medicare/medicaid and etc. They have the bucks to fund their own their own needs and the hell with those who need the help! I call it political genocide. Instead of giving Obama his props about issues he said that he would address, conservatives are doing everything than can to ensure he fails. The economy was literally in the toilet, but is anyone saying he was instrumental in bringing a resolution to the table that worked and is working? No! It sickens me to know that there politicians that rather fight good agendas for the sake of being "conservative" rather than just being a good American interested in making America as a whole even better. It is a sad example of democracy!!!! Please don't give my conntact information away. They may try to bump me off for telling the truth. Something that is void to them. remember Sarah Palin?

    • Say what? Obama is now responsible for California?
    • Where do you get "Obama school of hard knocks" when you are talking about California? My understanding that the 'Terminator', a republican, has been governor there for his 2 term limit. Obama had nothing to do with California! As far as that retired California Sheriff, I guess your idea would be to what, kick him out on his ear and give him a gold watch? Don't you believe that some retirement benefits are appropriate? Longer unemployment benefits are a work Disincentive? Interview someone who has looked for over a year for a job and tell me how that is a Disincentive? It was the Banking Industry that bankrupted this country under 8 years of another party, not Obama. Tell me about how the unemployed can't afford health insurance. I guess to you - That's tough stuff! They must be Slackers! Or some illegal alien stole their job! Heaven forbid we tax anyone. Remember when we had a 70% tax bracket? But, I'll bet when it comes to keeping the troops in Iraq and Afganistan - you're one of the cheerleaders! This is tired, used and abused, rhetoric from a group that has nothing better to offer than hypocrisy! Cut taxes and the Rich will take care of us? Good luck on that one!

    • Unemployment benifits are not a work disincentive
    • Unemployment benefits in Europe are different than in the United States. My understanding, in Europe your benefits are a higher percentage of your salary and designed to keep you at your standard of living. In the United States it is much lower. In Missouri, it is about $1,200 per month. Tell me how a person can live on that little of income. Visit an unemployment office and look at the people who are out of work. They are trades people and professionals. Ask any one of them if they can live on unemployment.

    • Let's face it FLAT TAX EVERYONE! THIS includes BUSINESS! TAX the Corperate JETS! only give the write off of a coach ticket to destination. LETS face it, our politicians are in it for themselves and those who put them there. It's not the citizen.

    • Amen, brother! Such is the sad state of affairs when we elect people to their level of incompetence because the citizenry would prefer mindless handouts and doesn't ask any questions, nor does an ill-informed public wish to know details about (economic in this case) cause and effect. As the adage goes, be careful what you wish for because you just might get it. Since Jan 2009 perhaps people are now awakening from their 2008 stupor to this realization. With the "Big O" let's just hope we don't make the same mistake twice!

    • I am sick of everything being blamed on ONE MAN when anyone with Any Intelligence knows that it was the Bush/ Cheney "spend as much as humanly possible and do it secretly" that buried this country. SOME ONE has to PAY the BILL of the trillions we have racked up from a WAR that is strangely like Vietnam. Taxes are suppose to pay the bill. Time to pay up America. HEY we can save money by stopping the 8 billion we give a year to ISREAL. They do not want peace anyway and we need the money here. We better stop being republicans (which I am) and democrats and start being AMERICANS. UNITED WE STAND AND DIVIDED WE FALL. Right now , we are very divided. It is very sad.

    • schadenfreude
    • first, a definition: schadenfreude - gloating at someone else's bad luck. What kind of miserable person gloats at someone else's bad luck? Are students who are enrolled in colleges today responsible for the economic mess that California is in? Have you looked into the waste within many colleges and universities nationwide? And the fact that costs for a college education have far outpaced any other cost of living or inflation rates? Having worked in the system, I can tell you, many students are not getting their money's worth, while university employees walk away with huge retirement plans and benefits packages unheard of in the corporate world today. Need an example? Look into the pay that top level University administrators earn - and that doesn't include their benefits, such as housing, which are often added. Do students, as consumers, have any recourse?
