The president’s bogus challenge

Republicans are rightly skeptical of the president’s outstretched hand, given his call for bipartisanship now, only after Scott Brown’s win and his back against the wall. They heard similar calls from Candidate Obama, with promises made of GOP inclusion (and televised health care negotiations on C-SPAN in a show of transparency) only to have said promises evaporate behind closed doors.

Despite Obama’s challenge to bring “ideas of their own,” they’ve actually been there all along, ones that are solidly planted in the free market and therefore studiously ignored by much of the press. They include allowing health insurance to be sold across state lines, the promotion of consumer-driven plans and a change in the way in which individual insurance is taxed.

Commentators on the right warn of a trap if Republicans show up for Obama’s proposed meeting; that it will be controlled in a way to give Democrats the advantage. Fine, if this really is a concern demand equal time before ever agreeing to participate. Set the ground rules and stick to them. And if Democrats balk, as Newt Gingrich notes, let them be the ones to do so. In other words, trust the American public’s ability and intelligence, something we’re seeing less and less of from the current administration.

    • It all comes down to politics, Rep vs Dem. Politics is the #1 reason why Congress, Senate, and the Federal Government gets nothing done, and why costs are so inflated. And I believe is the #1 reason the US will never be a world leader again.

    • Why are you against everything? This is representative of Washington and why nothing is getting done. Constant name calling is not productive. The republicans have voted no on everything. They voted against the stimulus plan and then go home and attend ribbon cutting events for new local projects funded by the stimulus plan they voted against. Incredible! I trust the American public's ability and intelligence. I don't trust yours!

    • Your bias
    • Clearly you've only recently begun paying attention to what goes on inside the beltway, or else you'd know why Republicans have been labeled the "party of no". Not that Democrats have made the most of the opportunity given to them by voters during the last election, but it seems as though Republicans are just fine sitting on the sidelines voting no to every proposal and waiting for the next election in lieu of participating in meaningful discussions that might actually achieve something now. Unfortunately the people running this country are not the smartest most competent people for the job, they're just the ones who are best at convincing people they are.

    • The president’s bogus challenge
    • I've never read such drivel in my life as I have with JOHN SULLIVAN's nonsense in his editorial blog. Apparently he's been under a rock or more likely in a hole for the last 9 years! Sullivan's forgotten who put us here most recently - why, it's George W, of course! If the free market is what Sullival is after, what's with all the bail-outs that Paulson implemented under W's administration? I'm not surprised that members of the GOP (Grandstanding Ol' Pr!*&s) don't believe Obama. Instead of giving the man some support or simply even the benefit of doubt for getting us out of the hole that they were partly responsible for getting us into, they are playing politics as usual, led by Rush the Entertainer, no less! Or is it that the GOP just are not used to hearing someone say what they mean and mean what they say, given all the mis-information we were given over the last 9 years? It's time we (Independents and Republicans like) gave Obama a chance to right what is wrong, and play politics when and where it doesn't affect tens of millions of lives like not having health care or jobs have done to our fellow countrymen these last 3 years! Get over it Sullivan and have some more faith in Obama, unless you can't tell truth from lies as well! Good Day!

    • President's Challenge
    • Why does anyone quote Newt Gingrich on anything? He is a hack and a hipocrite. He served divorce papers on his wife while she was in the hospital battling cancer. He was carrying on an extra-marital affair while trying to impeach Clinton for the same thing. Now he claims that Richard Reid, aka the Shoe Bomber, was an American citizen and that is why the Bush Administration offered Miranda Rights to him. News Flash, Newt! Reid was & is a British citizen spending the rest of his life in a US prison. Do everyone a favor Newt and just go away.

    • Obabma's "bogus challenge"
    • Aw c'mon John. If the Republicans had any concern about the best plans for America would they vote like addled lemmings against every single Democratic proposal, regardless of its merits? If they had had any realistic ideas, they would have implemented them during Bush II, wouldn't they? Obama is not Congress. He is not a caucus. He is not a committee. Nor does he control those entities, which have vindictively stymied progress. Yet Republican leadership has snubbed him merely due to his party and/or his race. How embarrassingly juvenile.

    • More of the same hypocritical negativity
    • The republican stance has consistently been one of bashing this administration since day one. Their only strategy has been to be as obstructionist as possible. Every move is vilified and obstructed because of the same of old partisan politics. The hypocrisy stinks to high heaven. That is what the American People are sick of. The republican party's only response has been to condemn and critcize but offer no ideas, no spirit of cooperation, and no accountability for their own contirbution for the mess we are in. Claiming Scott Brown as a win for republicans is laughable. It is a win for the Independent movement that is fed up with the same old partisan garbage. So please spare us your tired drivel.

    • GOP Efforts
    • The real problem with the GOP is their half hearted efforts to fix this growing problem. They had years and never addressed it. Then when Dems prepared to pass laws they randomly submitted proposal after proposal; 36 formal proposals in all without a single consolidated effort. The GOP needs to show up, have their say and commit to following through. We didn't elect them to take their ball and go home the minute they disagree with something. This conservative's message to the GOP, "GET TO WORK!"

    • Republican Ideas?
    • You're not paying attention, Republicans, have only one idea, it begins with N and ends with O. No. And flip-flopping [Mc Cain] is their other strong suite. Scott Brown is pro-choice, how's that for a Republican idea?

    • Clearly you are not paying attention to what is going on in DC. The primary holding block is a Republican party that has neeb obstructing from the get go. From cabinet positions (70 at last count) to a jobs bill the Reps have stonewalled this President for absolute political gain. Incidently, I am sorry that this "magazine" is a political tool. Take me off the list.

    • Is this Fox News?
    • First of all I really don't think this is the right forum for Mr. Sullivan to be spouting his political agenda. Mr. Sullivan are you trying to impress Fox News for a job? Why have we not heard your comments about HOW we got in this financial mess, the worst since the depression? Bush-Obama Job Creation/Loss Chart http://tinyurl.com/ya7j7dw SEC Chairman Cox Admits Deregulation Caused Crisis http://tinyurl.com/nzz25g Under Pressure, Bush Eased Banks Lending Rules http://tinyurl.com/5casnp Greenspan: Oil the Prime Motive for Iraq War http://tinyurl.com/2726hs There are hundreds of news stories pointing the finger of destruction at Mr Bush and the neo-cons. Let's see, the Republicans ran Congress for 13 years (1993-2006) and the White House for 8 years (2000-2008), we're in the worst recession since the Great Depression and it's the Democrats fault? Not to mention 2 wars and over 4,400 dead American soldiers and tens of thousands wounded. Enlighten me how 3 years controlling Congress and 1 year controlling the White House has destroyed the work of 21 combined years of Republican rule?

    • Bogus? Gee, we're not prejudging, are we?
    • Looks like you're among those who is not really giving the American public enough credit to observe and decide for themselves. As an independent voter, I am tired of every legislative move being analyzed through party-colored glasses and fed to the public by the biased media (if the shoe fits...) Does the younger generation really need any more examples of cynicism and skepticism? And people wonder why there is voter apathy. I, for one, hope as many representatives as possible participate, no matter who 'organizes' a pubic debate, and will decide for myself.
